Quincy B

Perhaps the strangest and most unique anomaly of the 21st Century is , Mr. Quincy Boulevard Scovill – writer, performer, and producer, and resident mad monk from Tampa, Fl. Not necessarily a reinvented renaissance man or a dastardly Beau Brummell, Quincy B. politely shrugs his not-so-ordinary psychedelic image and remains steadfast and confident that the music and overall vibe of his funky little musical ditties, Peasants of Posture, Beatnik Castle, Scovill Avenue and Blind Granny, will appeal to all. In addition to his musical duites, Quincy owns and operates Mad Monk, LTD, an independent record label based in Tampa, Fl that was created through the visions of producer extraordinaire Quincy B. Scovill, Peasants of Posture vocalist Thomas E. Rasputin, and POP bassist Anastasia V. Romanov. In addition to producing Peasants of Posture’s CounterRevolution CD, Scovill Avenue’s Big House, Beatnik Castle’s (featuring singer, thee lovely Miss Francillia) maxi-cd single “Will U B Mine,” and Blind Granny’s upcoming debut CD My Head is Spinning, Quincy B involves himself in various projects in the Bay Area and abroad.

“Ah think we got a little bit of everything for everybody,” explains Quincy B. in a strong, southern Florida-Georgia droll. “Ah mean, we got some R & B, Hip-Hop, old school rap, metal, rock, jazz, cool funkadelic…lotsa neato stuff. We always aim to please our audience!”

Born and raised in Northeast Ohio (“Ah was actually born near Scovill Avenue,” he adds.), Quincy B was an unusual, rough and tumble character with a penchant for oppositional defiance. “They didn’t have stuff like Ritalin or ADHD when I was a kid,” he politely muses. “Ah probably woulda been on all kindsa meds…Ah was a smart-ass kid throughout high school.”

Because of his brief stint as an gym rat boxer, Quincy B earned the nickname “The Hit-Man” – a moniker reserved for the great Thomas Hitman Hearns.

“Tommy Hearns and Roberto Duran were mah idols growin’ up,” praises Quincy B. “Ah think Hearns shoulda won the first (Sugar Ray) Leonard fight…it shoulda never been stopped!” Quincy B. hung out with everybody –stoners, jocks, freaks, Goths, dorks…you name it, he was there. “Ah kinda like everybody…but ah really liked hangin’ out at home watchin’ tv…y’know, Lost in Space, Twighlight Zone, Space Ghost, Melrose Place…Ah like crazy yenta shows with lotsa gossip.”

Speaking of gossip, Quincy B. describes his cumulative image as “one big gossip mill.”

“Yep, that’s’ all it is…we’re one big gossip mill…gossip about marriage, divorce, hangin’ out at school, getting’ whupped…who’s bangin’ who and who knows about it! Heck, ah still watch all my gossipy-yenta shows like Gilmore Girls, Meadowlands, Falcon Beach, Hidden Palms, Deadwood, Northshore, and Prison Break. Even Law and Order is getting sorta gossipy!

His musical influences far outweigh his musical tastes. “Ah lissen to everythin’…Ah ‘specially dig chic singers and performers like Kelly Clarkson…Avril…Michelle Branch… hippie chics like Alanis and Janis. In fact, that’s why ah formed THMHHAGBBRTSSSB (The Hit-Man’s Hip-Hop All Girl Be Bop Ragtime Silver String Submarine Band). Ah jes’ love gals who can play real music and not just look pretty. It’s no secret that Quincy B. Scovill and Peasants of Posture bassist Anastasia V. Romanov have collaborated on several projects since high school.

“Contrary to whatevah rumors you hear, there ain’t nuthin’ goin’ on with us ‘cept the fact that we’ve been chums since high school. Annie’s like a sister. She’s probably the only cool chic I’ve know mah whole life! We’ve collaborated on a gazillion projects since high school but always went our separate ways. I did the Bermuda Cad thing, she started playin’ all that crazy clothespin stuff. She’s still hangin’ tough with the Peasants (of Posture).

Does Anastasia’s primary commitment to Peasants of Posture take away from her commitment to Scovill Avenue?
“Naw…. that’s all hogwash, man. We’re all friends from the olden days anyway. Me an’ (POP vocalist Thomas E.) Rasputin go way back as well. Besides, they got a much different sound and vibe goin’ on.” Annie splits her time accordingly…she likes hangin’ with us ‘cos she’s startin’ to get into that hippie-freaky stuff. She’s more of a punk bassist anyway. Heck, before she started hangin’ with us, she was diggin’ Ramones, The Pandoras, Violent Femmes, Devo, Dead Boys…now she’s into, like, The Who, Atomic Rooster, Captain Beyond, Deep Purple, stuff like that. She’s growin’ and maturin’ as a musician. Ah wish she’d eventually branch out and do her own thing without any of us hippie freak corrupting her.”

“Folks always aks me if I lissen to heavy heavy music…Ah love Korn…Danzig, death metal like In Flames, Death, Massacre,Australia’s Misery, Lacuna Coil and NightWish, …man, dat chic singer (Christina Scabbia) is really hot! My good buddy Rose has a really kickin’ all girl trio called Rebel Girl. Ah dig Noise Metal like Pile of Eggs, Merzbow, Demilich…Death and Massacre.…Three Dog Night…all the bubblegum 60’s stuff…Backstreet Boys…The Monkees Headquarters is mah favorite record!”

“What Ah really get inta is folk singers…jes’ sittin’ on a stool in a coffee house strummin’ away. Fer instance, gals like (St. Petersburg, Fl singer/songwriter) Lorna Bracewell or (Los Angels-based artist) Adrianne. Ani Defranco, Lexi (Pierson, Tampa-based singer/songwriter), Halcyon’s Deb (Hunsedder)…Man, ah can watch these gals play an’ sing all day an’ all night. They got somethin’ really special. Not to totally isolate from the Bay Area music scene, Quincy B. always keeps in close contact with Bay Area musicians, hanging out at coffeehouses and local gigs.

“ProStar Recording (Quincy B.’s “home-away-from home”) really caters to the local talent…that’s where ah first met Lorna. She records there. Heck, Pro Star records lotta local cats. It’s a really cool vibe over there!”

“Lorna’s always up for singin’ on Scovill Avenue stuff. Her voice is so unique ya can’t help but be drawn to anything she sings on! She sings the ad-libs and chorus on “burn”. She also sang on Annie’s POP stuff. She’s a real talent.” Also making a special appearance on Scovill Avenue’s debut cd “Big House” is the Man in Back, Johnny C. Other area musicians also join in for an occasional guest spot including Josef Trotsky, Nikita Nicole, Step N Fetch, Komrade Krushchev, “Berkeley” Bobby Koelbe (Junkie Rush), , Lady Mama Laid, Rae, PT, Michigan “Mic” Luke, Bootsy, Betty Lou Fox, Jody Gray, Jun Bustamonte, and local singer/songwriters Lorna Bracewell, Rae, PT, Deb and Lexi Pierson.

“And don’t forget that slimy little croaker Froggy MC” reminds Quincy B. “He’ll get really upset if we don’t mention his name. He’s got quite an ego, you know.”

Speaking of egos, for the second consecutive year, A Mad Monk, Ltd artists artist is on the Grammy ballot! Scovill Avenue, fresh of their 2008 release Big House, has been placed on the Official Ballot for the 2009 Grammy Awards by the National Academy of Recording Arts & Sciences in seven categories, including the coveted first three categories Record of the Year, Album of the Year, and Song of the Year, respectively.

“It’s definitely an honor to Scovill Avenue and a tribute to the Bay Area,” exclaims Quincy B. Scovill, producer, writer, resident mad man, and owner of Mad Monk, Ltd, a Tampa-based independent label with several artists on its roster. “Last year we did pretty well and I told everybody that this year would be even more special!” Scovill is alluding to last year’s nomination of Mad Monk’s signature act Peasants of Posture, adding that four different songs from POP’s 2007 debut CD CounterRevolution were recognized by the National Academy of Recording Arts & Sciences Committee and placed on the Official Ballot for the 2008 Grammy Awards in four different categories. Also joining Scovill in the nominations are local artists Lorna Bracewell, Jun Bustamonte, Rick “Key Low D” Dill, Prostar Recording Studio engineer Jodi Gray, Arthur Steur, Mz. Fortune, Francillia, and singer Jennifer B. Real.

“These folks helped make this happen,” Scovill jubilantly exclaims. “ProStar Recording, Mz. Fortune, Piano Man, Johnny “D.S.” Cash, local rapper Ace of Jays, Adrianne, Berkely Bob, Deb Hunsedder, Jeremy Thomas, Shelter Kidd, Betty Lou Fox, and Francillia…We helped make this happen with a concerted team effort!” Scovill is quick to add that Mad Monk, Ltd is planning to release a CD maxi-single of “Will U B Mine,” nominated for Best Dance Recording, later this year and, under the moniker Beatnik Castle. The single will feature new Mad Monk, LTD artist Francillia, as well as latin, techno, club, acoustic, and Island remixes by Scovill, Key Lo D, DJ Lenny B, and famed Miami DJ Cato K. Francillia’s full-length CD, tentatively titled “Temptation” is scheduled for release Spring 2009. Big House (and CounterRevolution) is still available through CD Baby at http://cdbaby.com/cd/scovillavenue3.

“It’s an honor to be recognized for your songwriting and performances, “he excitedly exclaims, adding that he hopes some of the songs on BIG House will be recognized as well. Anastasia adds that she and Quincy B are currently writing heavy, melodic orchestrated pieces for various television and cinema.

“We take our influences from Big Brother & Holding Company, Sweetwater, Dan Reed, Enuff Z’Nuff, Atomic Rooster, Captain Beyond, Trouble, Quicksilver Messenger Service, Curved Air…really trippy/hippy rock stuff,” Quincy confesses, but adds that Beatnik Castle, Scovill Avenue, Blind Granny and Peasants of Posture are separate entities with an unique individual musical prowess.

“The Beatnik Castle and Blind Granny is more club and house, where as Scovill Avenue is more funky blues and Hip-Hop.” Quincy says that both projects have songs with a hearty vibe for 70’s disco. You can check out a medley of Beatnik Castle songs at www.myspace.com/BeatnikCastle and Scovill Avenue tunes at  www.myspace.com/scovilleavnue Also check out Blind Granny at www.myspace.com/blindgrannyPeasants of Posture have a more metal vibe and can be heard at www.myspace.com/rasputinmadmonk.
